Keeping the Balance: Images of Florida's Unspoiled Places

For nearly 20 years award winning photographer Sean M. Dowie has been photographing Florida's diverse landscapes and unique wildlife. He is a graduate from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As a graduate from the naturalist program at the University of Florida, and a freelance photographer for a variety of nature and wildlife publications, Dowie is helping to preserve Florida's hidden treasures. The Art of Living Green

The Art of Living Green will be held on the museum's grounds Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. It will be a family-friendly celebration featuring workshops, exhibitors, and activities focused on greener living. Carter Oosterhouse, host of HGTV's Red Hot & Green, will be at the event on Saturday. Saturday evening, the museum will host a private VIP party in the gallery. In art, variations can include technique, materials and subject. The works in this show are all beautiful and striking, but appear to have little in common. They do, however, offer the viewer a wide variety of incredible treats for the eye. Artists include Anna Allegra Desio, Ted Ellis, George Paxton, Leslie Swift and Rita Ziegler.
Tribute to Backus
February 18 - March 14, 2009
For more than 18 years, the Backus Museum has presented a Tribute to A.E. Backus the "Dean of Florida Landscape Painters." No other 20th century artist captured the Florida light quite like he could. Backus came into prominence as a national artist in the 1960s when his work was hung in President Lyndon B. Johnson's library in Texas and in Senate offices in Washington, D.C. In 1993 he was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Selected paintings from private collection on exhibition.

The annual Backus Arts Festival takes over Veterans Park in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce with an extravaganza for the senses. A variety of artists and tasty foods grace the museum's oak shaded grounds for this two-day event.

served from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Brunch served from 9:00 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. Brunch tickets sold at the door; advance sales available. Adults, $15.00, children under 10, $5.00. The "all you should eat" Backus Brunch is legendary. Feast on fresh fried mahi-mahi, scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, cheese grits, fresh squeezed orange juice and much more. Then at 12:30, the ticket will be drawn to reveal the winner of this year's original Backus painting. Over $6,000 in additional prizes will be awarded. Raffle tickets are $20.
The Saint Lucie County High School Show

In 1950, a small number of African Americans began painting Florida landscapes as a livelihood. With encouragement from A. E. "Bean" Backus, these young Treasure Coast entrepreneurs developed their individual techniques and rendered landscapes with beauty and allure. In 1990 the moniker Florida Highwaymen was ascribed; the rest, as they say, is history. Enjoy an exhibition of vintage paintings from some of the best private collections, as well as a variety of vintage paintings for sale.
